The Kabataan Party today hit the Arroyo government for its continuous betrayal of the Filipino youth and EDSA Dos, saying that the rash granting of pardon to former President Joseph Estrada shows Mrs. Arroyo’s ultimate abandonment of EDSA Dos principles.

“Such developments only show how Mrs. Arroyo continues to betray the youth and the ideals and principles of the people’s uprising that catapulted her to power,” Kabataan Party President Raymond Palatino said.

Palatino warned that the hasty pardon for Estrada and the unresolved cases of bribery and corruption involving Malacanang and several politicians set a bad precedent for future officials and could further erode public trust in the government.

“The impetuous pardon for Estrada and unsolved cases of corruption highlight how hypocrisy and lack of accountability has reached new heights under the current administration. It’s distressing to see how the present government is more than willing to sacrifice long-standing
legal and democratic rights and even credibility and morality in the government for political accommodation and greed for power,” he pointed out.

“It is appalling to see how the Arroyo government is using the Estrada case to divert public attention from far worse cases of corruption and plunder involving the president herself and her
cohorts,” he added.

Bad precedent for village polls

“It’s also disturbing that we are having this shameless display of decadence in the government in the eve of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections,” he lamented.

Palatino also expressed fear that the scandals of corruption and the new twist in the Estrada plunder case might send a negative message to future government officials that they are above the law and can have the government run at their own whim.

He added that these events could also result to an increase in the number of corruption cases in the government as it gives corrupt politicians the notion of being “invincible.”

“What would prevent crooked politicians from engaging more in corruption and other unlawful practices if mechanisms for accountability are weak and can be easily bent by political interests
and money?”

“We fear that these events will further erode the remaining confidence of the people, especially the youth, to our democratic institutions and processes and embed corruption deeper in our political system.” he added.

This was youth group Anakbayan’s statement on the 35th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law as it joined other human rights and cause-oriented groups in the commemoration march-protest held in Manila today.

“While Martial Law veterans are experiencing a sense of déjà vu, young activists today are encountering how it was during the dark days of martial rule. It is characterized not only by a kind of state terror more blatant and merciless than before, but also by corruption and economic plunder at its worst under the new Arroyo dictatorship,” said Anakbayan chairperson Eleanor de Guzman.

De Guzman cited the continuing spate of political killings, the latest of which was the murder of an urban poor leader in Cavite, the political persecution and repression of government critics, legitimacy issues and the recent explosive ZTE controversy. <!-- D(["mb","

"All these remain unresolved because the Arroyo administration persists on employing martial rule tactics in order to evade accountability. Accountability is tantamount to yielding power, a thing unimaginable for this dictator administration," said de Guzman.

First Couple and the Cabinet of Cons</span\></font\>
</div\>
Anakbayan, however, stressed that the ZTE controversy is a volatile political issue that the First Couple and all others involved should face squarely.

"Gone are the days when the President and her spokespersons can easily brush off controversies involving the First Gentleman. FG Mike is not just a mere thorn in Mrs. Arroyo's side. The ZTE deal proves once and for all that he is none other than her accomplice.
The murals depict the aspirations and struggles of a people for genuine freedom, symbolized by Macario Sakay’s leadership of the national revolutionary movement against US colonial rule and the young firebrand Lean Alejandro’s fight against tyranny.
It is a time to remember. We hope you can join us.

A strong sense of history is needed in order to achieve real and lasting independence. Thus, focus is given to Filipino revolutionary hero Macario Sakay and youth activist Lean Alejandro. Although separated by 80 years, the two lives of the heroes symbolize the aspirations and hopes of a free nation. Sakay and Lean are not larger than life heroes, though their acts of resistance are heroic. Sakay was an original member of the Katipunan who continued the struggle for national liberation against US colonial rule. Maligned by American authorities and mainstream history books, Sakay was hanged on September 13, 1907, a victim of American and local elite treachery. Considered as one of the most popular and courageous activist of the 1980s, Lean led massive rallies against the Marcos dictatorship and took part in rebuilding the democratic order after the fall of the tyrannical regime. On September 19, 1987, the 27-year old Lean was slain by unknown gunmen.
