Statement from Malu Fernandez on the OFW Controversy

Mula sa www.geocities.com/fernandez_malu

I am humbled by the vehement and heated response provoked by my article entitled ‘From Boracay to Greece!’ which came out in the June 2007 issue of People Asia. To say that this article was not meant to malign, hurt or express prejudice against the OFWs now sounds hollow after reading through all the blogs from Filipinos all over the world. I am deeply apologetic for my insensitivity and the offensive manner in which this article was written, I hear you all and I am properly rebuked. It was truly not my intention to malign hurt or express prejudice against OFWs.

As the recent recipient and target of death threats, hate blogs, and deeply personal insults, I now truly understand the insidiousness of discrimination and prejudice disguised as humor. Our society is bound together by human chains of kindness and decency. I have failed to observe this and I am now reaping the consequences of my actions. It is my fervent hope that the lessons that Ive learned are not lost on all those who through anonymous blogs, engaged in bigotry, discrimination, and hatred ( against overweight individuals , for example )

I take full responsibility for my actions and my friends and family have nothing to do with this. To date I have submitted my resignation letters to both the Manila Standard and People Asia, on that note may this matter be laid to rest.

Nasa ederic@cyberspace ang aking reaksyon sa pahayag na ito.

Samantala, dahil sa development na ito, maaaring magkaroon ng pagbabago sa Proyektong Malu Fernandez.

after hearing insights about what Malu Fernandez’ article was all about and heard what Miss Fernandez has to say, i would like to throw my own insights about this, as a filipino citizen that was fed to much of her insensitivity, i would like to say “*sigh* you’re a total disgrace of the filipino race, how dare you” but as a forgiving person and an understanding citizen “i accept your apology, knowing the proper actions that you took, I guess you suffered enough”… im just hoping that youre the last person to look down their own race… that’s all..

What she wrote was most certainly funny, witty and yes very very pathetic. A trying hard Jessica Zafra is not and will never be. Truly, she had merely exposed how sad her existence was by trying to be cute and funny at the expense of our OFWs.However, she is one very effective writer, effective on raising the ire of indignant bloggers.

    Ms. Fernandez,

Now at least you’ve learned your lesson. Likewise, i recommend you to read what the editor-in-chief of business mirror, 30 August edition, by the name of Lourdes Fernandez. Surely, marami kang mapupulot doon which could enhance your literary ability on with and humor.
Also, in my opinion, I hold the magazine which published your sarcastic, acerbic comments regarding OFWs responsible. They have the editors which screen the columnist’s writings. Or, they as well the same you, without feelings? Just a question.

your “flaw” of being overweight(to say the least) has been noticed because of the irresponsible and inconsiderate comment you made about OFWs in general. If you had used your time in dieting and proper excercise instead of channeling your frustrations through tactlessness and harsh words upon your hapless victims, then you might have attained the figure that you have wished for your whole life.

Now, after resigning from your job, it is only now that you just realize that you should not have propped yourself that high on your imaginary podium only to crash to the floor….hard
